Weekend sports car access for a freelance designer
A creative freelancer used our service to maintain a low-cost city car for daily use. Every third weekend, he swapped for a high-performance sports car for trips to the coast. We managed the insurance transitions and ensured the car was ready for Friday 4pm pickups. He avoids the high cost of owning two vehicles while enjoying both.
Aris needed a way to get to his studio in central Reading during the week without giving up his hobby of coastal driving on the weekends. We set up a rotation that keeps a small hatchback at his flat for the school run while having a performance car ready for his Friday trips to the Dorset coast.
The challenge
Owning two cars in Reading is a logistical headache. Parking at Aris's flat costs £85 a month for a single space. Insurance for a second high-performance car was quoted at £1,425 a year because it would be parked on the street. Aris was spending roughly £630 a month on a sports car he only used 5 or 6 days a month, which felt like a massive waste of cash. He needed to cut that monthly drain without losing the ability to drive something fast when the weather cleared up.
Our approach
Our team of 4 at the Station Road office looked at his driving data from the previous year. We mapped out a schedule for Q3 2024 that gave him 3 designated weekends with a performance vehicle. We handled the insurance switch-overs in-house so Aris didn't have to call his broker every time he swapped keys. We kept a 2021 VW Polo as his primary vehicle and reserved a 2022 Porsche 718 Cayman for his specific dates. To be honest, the hardest part was just making sure the valet team had the Porsche ready for his sharp 4:15pm Friday departure.
The solution
Off Hours Coding provided a single subscription that covers both vehicles under one monthly bill. Aris now uses the Polo for 26 days of the month, which is easy to park and cheap on fuel. On his swap weekends, he brings the Polo to our 58 Station Road garage. The handover takes about 6 minutes. He drives away in a cleaned, fully-fuelled sports car with the insurance already active. On Monday morning, he drops it back before his 9:30am design meeting and picks up the Polo again.
Results
Aris reduced his total monthly motoring spend while actually spending more hours in a performance car than he did when he owned one privately. He has no long-term debt and doesn't worry about the depreciation of the sports car over the winter months.

"I was worried the handovers would be a faff. It actually takes about 6 minutes. I drop one set of keys, grab the other, and I'm on the A33 heading south before the traffic peaks."
