Choosing the right sedan for client meetings in London
Most IT contracts in Reading eventually lead to a meeting near Old Street or Liverpool Street. It is a 42-mile drive that can take 90 minutes or three hours depending on the M4. You need a car that handles the crawl without draining your energy before the pitch starts.
The Shoreditch width test
Shoreditch was not built for modern SUVs. Many of the side streets near Hoxton Square are narrow and filled with delivery vans at 10:00 on a Tuesday. We have 7 executive sedans in our Reading hub right now. The BMW 330e is exactly 1.82 metres wide without the mirrors. This small detail matters when you are trying to navigate past a parked lorry on a tight bend. If your car is too wide, you end up stressed before you even walk into the client's office. Stress is a silent killer for a sales pitch.
Last month, 14 of our members reported that the 360-degree cameras on our Audi A4 models saved their alloy wheels from kerb damage. We don't charge for tiny scuffs, but nobody wants to turn up to a meeting with a grinding sound coming from their front left tyre. The A4 has a turning circle of 11.6 metres. It is nimble enough to perform a U-turn on Great Eastern Street if the SatNav sends you the wrong way. We tell our members to stick to the sedans for these trips because they fit where SUVs simply don't.
A sports car is great for Saturday, but a quiet hybrid wins for Tuesday mornings.

Managing the M4 commute noise
The M4 is a noisy stretch of road, especially between Junction 8/9 and the Heathrow turn-off. Wind noise and tyre roar can make a hands-free call almost impossible. We used a decibel meter in three of our cars while travelling at 68 mph. The Tesla Model 3 recorded 66.4 decibels inside the cabin. This is significantly quieter than the 71.2 decibels we recorded in some of our older hatchback models. When you are on a call with a Project Manager at 08:45, you need them to hear your voice, not the wind hitting your wing mirrors.
One of our members, a freelance developer named David, noted in October 2024 that the quietness of the cabin helped him prep for a high-stakes meeting. He spent the 55-minute drive from Reading to Hammersmith listening to his notes without having to crank the volume to 99.3%. Our BMW 3 Series fleet uses acoustic glazing on the front windows. It's a small technical spec, but it cuts out the high-frequency hiss from passing traffic. It makes the drive feel like a private office rather than a transit route.
Boot capacity for technical gear
Sometimes a client meeting involves more than just a laptop and a notebook. You might be carrying a demo server, three 27-inch monitors, or a box of VR headsets. The boot in the Audi A4 offers 460 litres of space. In May 2024, a member named Sarah had to transport 47 slim-client units to a site in Paddington. She managed to fit 32 of them in the boot alone by stacking them vertically. The low load lip of the A4 meant she didn't strain her back while lifting the gear out near the canal.
We also compare this to the Tesla Model 3, which has a smaller opening but includes the 'frunk' or front trunk. The frunk is a perfect spot for your personal bag and charging cables, keeping them separate from the dusty hardware in the back. Having 88 litres of space under the bonnet is surprisingly handy for keeping your suit jacket flat and wrinkle-free. We find that for most tech pros, the sedan format provides enough security for expensive kit while keeping it out of sight of passers-by.

The congestion charge math
Driving into the London Congestion Charge zone costs £15 per day. If you go in four times a month, that is £60 straight out of your pocket. Our plug-in hybrids, like the BMW 330e, don't automatically get a 99.5% discount anymore, but they are ULEZ compliant. However, the real saving comes from the fuel economy in stop-start traffic. One member tracked his fuel spend for three weeks in June 2024. He saved £42.30 compared to his previous 2.0-litre petrol car because the hybrid system handled the crawl from Chiswick to Marylebone.
We honestly tell people that if you're only going into London once a year, take the train from Reading Station. It takes 24 minutes on the fast line. But if you have 3 meetings in different parts of the city in one day, the train becomes a nightmare. Our cars come with integrated tolls and parking apps that we have already set up. You don't have to spend 10 minutes on a rainy pavement trying to register your credit card with a new parking provider. We handle the paperwork, you just drive.
The 12-member feedback loop
We don't just guess which cars are best. We asked 12 of our most active members to rank our executive fleet based on their London trips over the last 6 months. The BMW 330e took the top spot for overall comfort. One member, Gareth, mentioned that the seat heaters were essential for his 06:30 starts in February. He rated the lumbar support 4.8 out of 5, which is important if you have a history of back pain from sitting at a desk for 9 hours a day.
Interestingly, the Tesla Model 3 was the favourite for those who use Autopilot on the motorway sections. While it isn't fully self-driving, it takes the 'leg work' out of the M4 traffic jams. About 31% of our members say they feel less tired after a London round-trip in the Tesla compared to our manual petrol cars. We take this data and use it to decide which cars to buy for the hub. We're not the cheapest subscription in Reading, but we buy the cars that actually help you do your job.

Swapping for the weekend
The best part of our model at Off Hours Coding is that you don't have to live with the sedan on Saturday. After your Friday afternoon meeting, you can drop the BMW at our Station Road hub and swap it for something more fun for the weekend. We have 4 sports cars in the fleet specifically for this. You get the professional look for the client pitch and the performance for a Sunday drive through the North Wessex Downs. It's one monthly bill that covers both lives.
We saw a trend in July where 5 members swapped their executive cars for estates because they were heading to the coast with their families. That is the point of what we do. You aren't stuck with a 'meeting car' when you actually need a 'holiday car'. Our team of 5 people in the Reading office makes sure the swap takes less than 8 minutes. We even help you move your bags from one car to the other. To be upfront, we only allow 4 swaps per month, but for most tech pros, that is more than enough to stay flexible.
